Advocacy Work

Tariff Updates

Mar 12, 2025

As the uncertainty surrounding President Trump’s tariffs continue to fester, the Guelph Chamber continues to monitor the situation, while working closely with our chamber counterparts provincially and nationally to advocate for stability. Unpredictability is a business killer – we know that businesses cannot thrive, grow, plan, or invest when drastic and frequent changes are made overnight to policy.

As of March 12, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum are in place, meaning that any steel and aluminum that is imported into the U.S. is subject to a tariff of 25%. These harmful tariffs and the continual threats of tariffs prove to be unproductive and destructive for both Canadians and Americans alike. We must move away from tariffs and towards a productive and respected trade agreement on all sides.

On March 12, Canada announced countermeasures that follows a dollar-for-dollar approach to be imposed as of today. For a list of goods affected, click here.
