NAFTA 2.0 to Take Centre Stage at Guelph Economic Leadership Forum

For Immediate Release | Apr 5, 2018

On Thursday May 3 2018, in partnership with Export Development Canada and Welke Customs Brokers Ltd., the Guelph Chamber of Commerce will host the ‘Guelph Economic Leadership Forum: on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)’. Outgoing Acting Economist at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and incoming CEO of Next Generation Manufacturing Canada, Jayson Myers will be the keynote speaker.

“Jayson Myers is a leading voice in Canada on NAFTA and trade,” says Kithio Mwanzia, Guelph Chamber President & CEO. “As businesses in Guelph and across the country consider the implications of a revamped NAFTA arrangement, the insight Jayson will be able to offer will help local businesses prepare for NAFTA 2.0.,” adds Mwanzia.

In addition to the keynote, there will be a moderated Q & A with Director of Policy from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Ashley Challinor. Ashley brings with her a breadth of experience in public policy as well as knowledge of how the Ontario Chamber has been working with State-Level Chambers of Commerce across the United States on the NAFTA 2.0. agenda.

The Guelph Chamber of Commerce made its submission to inform the NAFTA renegotiation process in the summer of last year during the consultation period. Given that NAFTA has been in force for over 20 years, the Government of Canada also sought information on the areas that have proved the most beneficial to Canadian exporters. As part of the modernization, it remains vitally important that the Government of Canada recommit to the principles of the Canada-US Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC) in its initiative to harmonize regulatory requirements and practices.

“Guelph is home to a number of leading Canadian companies that do business on both sides of the border, Canada and the United States share one of the most unique and prosperous relationships in the world driven by the success and ingenuity of business on both sides of the border,” concludes Mwanzia.

The ‘Guelph Economic Leadership Forum: on NAFTA’ will take place on Thursday May 3, from 11:30am until 2pm at the Delta Guelph.
